Low-Salt and Low-Sugar Cooking Competition to promote healthy diet

On 3 February, the Office of Service-Learning collaborated with Tuen Mun District Council and Free Methodist Church Leung Tin Children & Youth Integrated Services Centre to organise the “Low-Salt & Low-Sugar Cooking Competition”.  The purpose of the event was to cultivate the culture of healthy diet and healthy cooking among the public, and improve Tuen Mun residents’ knowledge on low-salt and low-sugar dietary habits.

Apart from promoting the concept of healthy diet, the event also encouraged participation from Lingnan students, teachers and elderly volunteers.  It recruited 15 Lingnan students to assist the operations of different educational booths with the theme focused on low-sugar, low-calories and low-salt consumption.  The event not only provided our students with valuable knowledge on healthy diet but also served as a platform for them to communicate with people in different age groups.

Another highlight of the event was the sharing by the competition’s judging panel member Dr Siu Yan-ho, Lecturer of Department of Chinese, who talked about the difference in salt, sugar and oil consumptions in different eras.  He also shared about the rise and fall of Hakka cuisine in Hong Kong, enriching participants’ understanding towards food culture and healthy diet in our community.
