Lingnan University has established the “AR Charitable Foundation Scholarship Scheme” for Risk and Insurance Management students in recognition of the generous donation of an earmarked amount of at least HK$10 million from AR Charitable Foundation Limited. A launch ceremony was held today at the University Club.

As one of the most comprehensive scholarship schemes for Risk and Insurance Management (RIM) students in Hong Kong, the scheme covers a period of eight consecutive academic years starting from 2013/14, providing financial support for Lingnan students to pursue the BBA (Hons) in Risk and Insurance Management Programme and go on to study the Master in Science Programme in Insurance (or RIM or financial services) at CASS Business School, City University of London. The scheme aims to develop young talent for the insurance industry and includes internship and mentorship opportunities for students. This year, three Year-two students Jessica Law Ting-yuk, Tsui Wai-shing and Wong King-chun, as well as one Year-three student Cheryl Lee Cheuk-tung, were awarded the AR Scholarship.

"I am very honoured and thankful to be selected as one of the recipients of the AR Charitable Foundation Scholarship this year. The scholarship not only alleviates my financial burden but also allows me to concentrate more on my study,” said Cheryl Lee, the Year-three awardee. “As an undergraduate student in Risk and Insurance Management, I feel optimistic towards the career prospects in the insurance sector, which is one of the fastest growing sectors in the financial services industry in Hong Kong. Thanks again to the donors who help me get closer to accomplish my goal. Their generosity has also inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as they have helped me.”

Addressing the ceremony, Mr Mason Wu, Director of AR Charitable Foundation Limited, commended Lingnan’s liberal arts education and its RIM programme, “The Foundation values highly the unique RIM programme offered by Lingnan University. I am truly confident that Lingnan is capable of nurturing bright, young talent for the insurance industry under the liberal arts context with an emphasis on students’ whole-person development.” He also called on young people interested in the field to be “active, sociable and resilient”, keeping “an open mind in building social networks and be ready to meet challenges” for success in their future career.

Chairman of the University Council, the Hon Bernard Charnwut Chan, thanked all those who have contributed to make the scholarship scheme a reality. “This ceremony today marks the excellent collaboration between AR Charitable Foundation and Lingnan University in nurturing future leaders in the insurance industry. I have to thank those who have participated in liaising and working on this collaboration, especially Mrs Loretta Shuen, our Council Treasurer. I trust that with the concerted efforts of academics, students and the support given by AR Charitable Foundation, Lingnan has all the potential to advance farther on its road to become one of the best liberal arts institutions in the Asia-Pacific region,” he said.

In his thank-you speech, President Leonard K Cheng said Lingnan would do its best to ensure the distinctive academic quality and competitive edge of the RIM programme, and promote the AR Charitable Foundation Scholarship Scheme to prospective students in the secondary schools, “By paying extra promotional effort on the scholarship scheme, we hope to attract outstanding secondary students who aspire to work in the insurance field to enrol in our RIM programme. With the support of AR Charitable Foundation and all the professional bodies of the insurance industry, I have full confidence that Lingnan will succeed in bringing the academic excellence of the RIM programme to new heights.”

Ms Annie Choi, Commissioner of Insurance of the HKSAR Government, was invited to attend the launch ceremony. Representatives of insurance professional bodies, including Mr Kelvin Cheung of the Insurance Institute of Hong Kong; Mr Tony Mak, Chairman of the Hong Kong Society of Certified Insurance Practitioners; and Mr Thomas Lee, Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers, also joined the event to show their support and spoke on the career prospects in the industry.
