Lingnan University welcomes new students with a series of orientation activities

With the approach of the new academic year, the Lingnan community has prepared a series of orientation activities to welcome freshmen who will soon be part of the Lingnan family.

On 25 and 26 July, 149 second and third year students participated in a two-day Peer Mentorship Training Programme in which they learned to be mentors of freshmen. Through team-building games and group discussions, senior students were equipped with the skills to help freshmen adapt to the new environment.

The New Student Orientation took place from 21 to 23 August, providing freshmen with information on academic and campus life as well as guidance on how to make the most out of their university education. They also had the opportunity to taste the vibrant living and learning environment through watching the performances and visiting the booths of different interest clubs at the Campus Life Carnival. The University also advocated green attitudes among new students in the Orientation through recycling food leftovers, plastic boxes and tin cans, provision of vegetarian foods for non-vegetarians, and offering a plastic fan with green living tips to each new student.

Congratulating new students on embarking on their journey of university education, President Leonard K Cheng reminded our freshmen in his welcoming address that they are among the most talented of their cohort, and are therefore given the privilege to pursue tertiary education at a government-funded university. “You have been chosen through a rigorous process to shape Hong Kong’s future. With confidence, dedication and perseverance, I am sure you will excel in your academic endeavor, develop a rewarding career, and become an able and responsible citizen of our city, our nation, and our world,” said President Cheng.

Apart from the New Student Orientation for local students, a welcoming lunch and a one-and-a-half day orientation were organised on 19 and 20 August for 55 new non-local degree seeking students from overseas and Mainland China, among whom are ten scholarship recipients.

The University has also prepared a First Year Experience Programme to help new students adjust to university life.
