24 Nov 2015

Lingnan University organised the Naming Ceremony of “The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong Integrated IT Study Centre” today (24 November) in appreciation of the generosity of The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (“CMA”) in donating HK$4 million to establish the “First Generation University Education Fund”.  The Fund will provide financial assistance to students who are the first generation in their family receiving university education but with financial difficulties in joining exchange studies, hostel residence and internship programmes.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen, Council Chairman of Lingnan University said it was an honour to Lingnan University to have CMA’s donation to set up the First Generation University Education Fund.  “Apart from expressing our gratitude to CMA for its support to Lingnan University, today we named the Integrated IT Study Centre after The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong because we want our students to remember firmly CMA’s spirit of “From the Community, For the Community”, and give back to the society after graduation,” said Mr Auyeung.

Founded in 1934, CMA has over 3,000 member companies and is one of the most representative industrial associations in Hong Kong.  CMA is dedicated to promoting Hong Kong’s industrial and trade development, and also well known for its continued and extensive community services, especially in education.

In his address at the Ceremony, Dr Eddy S H Li, BBS, JP, President of The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong pointed out that Lingnan University is Hong Kong’s only liberal arts university which is dedicated to nurturing students with critical thinking, broad horizon and flexibility who possess the attributes to shoulder social responsibilities, and encouraging teachers and students to contribute to the society through original research and knowledge transfer.  CMA deeply acknowledges these missions.  “To support Lingnan University’s mission of “Education for Service” and nurture more outstanding talents for Hong Kong, CMA has donated HK$4 million to the University to set up a fund for providing financial support for students from grassroots families and those with excellent academic achievements to join hostel residence and overseas exchange,” said Dr Li.

In his remarks, Prof Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University thanked CMA’s for sharing the same vision of Lingnan University and their long term support to the University.  “Establishment of the First Generation University Education Fund provides equal opportunities for students who are the first generation in their family receiving university education to participate in whole-person development projects and activities such as overseas and Mainland exchange studies, internship and hostel residence, and helps them fully unleash their potentials,” said Prof Cheng.  He hoped Lingnan University’s collaboration and exchange with CMA can be strengthened continuously in the future for nurturing talents for the society.
