Lingnan University hosted the “A Day at University” campus visit for 145 students from 15 primary schools in Tuen Mun today (2 March), which offered primary school students the opportunity to experience university life in a liberal arts university campus. The activity also served to strengthen the University’s connections with its neighbouring communities.

“A Day at University” was co-organised by the Student Services Centre of Lingnan University, Tuen Mun District Youth Programme Committee and Tuen Mun District Office. The event is an activity under the 2015/16 “Strive for Success” Tuen Mun District Primary Students Award Scheme, which aims to encourage primary school students to attain goals set by themselves and help them establish positive values and life direction.

During the one-day visit, participating primary school students attended a lecture on “Organisational Behaviour” by Prof Chen Yifeng, Associate Professor of the University’s Department of Management, joined group tutorials, had lunch together with Lingnan students during which they interacted with each other, and joined a tour to the campus facilities such as library, gymnasium and student hostels.

In his address at the event’s award presentation ceremony, Mr Kwu Hon-keung, Chairman of the Tuen Mun District Youth Programme Committee, said that the campus visit was organised for the fifth consecutive year, and he expressed his gratitude to the support of Lingnan University and the active participation of primary schools in the District. This year, 252 primary five or six students from 26 schools participate in the “Strive for Success” Tuen Mun District Primary Students Award Scheme and they all receive certificates. Among them, 145 students from 15 schools were invited to attend this visit. “The event allows every primary school student to gain more personal experience on learning and daily life in a university campus, which help broaden their horizon and encourage them to study hard for the target of studying in a university,” said Mr Kwu.

Dr Veronica Tam, Director of Student Services of Lingnan University remarked in her speech that the visit provided an opportunity for Lingnan students to participate in community service by offering a chance for them to organise campus tour for primary school students in Tuen Mun. “Lingnan University has all along encouraged students to join community service.  The University will continue to collaborate with different parties to organise meaningful activities to nurture generations of outstanding talents for Hong Kong,” she said.
