27 Aug 2016

With the approach of the new academic year, the Division of Graduate Studies organised the Orientation for Taught Postgraduate Students on 27 August to welcome new members of the Lingnan family.

In his welcoming remarks, President Leonard K Cheng welcomed the new students on behalf of the University, and wished them a joyful and fruitful new academic year.  Mr Henry Sam Chien-man, Chairman of Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong) (LUAA) welcomed the new Lingnanians, introduced to them how the Association strengthened the bond between Lingnanians and encouraged them to join as members when they graduate.  Prof Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Vice-President then shared the achievements of Lingnan and the recent academic events organised by DGS, as well as a series of activities and courses aimed at enhancing learning experience of postgraduate students at Lingnan.

A series of talks that followed provided students with information about the University and Hong Kong as well as issues related to their academic and campus life.  They included a talk by Mr Foster Yim, Executive Committee member of LUAA who shared about the history of Lingnan University, and an overview of the University given by Ms Florence Chan Yuk-sau, Director of Communications and Public Affairs.  To address the study needs of students, Prof James Pounder, Director of Teaching and Learning Centre introduced different aspects of teaching and learning at Lingnan.  Dr Josiah Chan Tin-yan, Assistant Director of Student Services Centre, outlined the services provided by the Centre to postgraduate students.  The Chaplain’s Office also introduced their various students’ activities.

Since quite a number of the new students are non-locals, representatives of the Hong Kong Police Force were invited to talk about the laws of Hong Kong and some practical issues of living in Hong Kong.  Furthermore, Prof Lau Chi-pang from the Department of History gave a historical sketch of Hong Kong, and Prof Wei Xiangdong, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences offered an economic overview of Hong Kong.

Apart from this orientation, an array of extended induction programmes for new postgraduate students, including workshops on academic writing and effective presentations, survival Cantonese lesson, and lectures on job hunting and working in Hong Kong will be organised from the beginning of this semester.
