21 Jun 2023

Lingnan University (LU) welcomes the passage of the Lingnan University (Amendment) Bill 2023 (the Bill) by the Legislative Council (LegCo) today (21 June 2023).  The Bill is a significant milestone in enhancing the governance of LU in preparation for its future growth.

LU Council Chairman, Mr Andrew Yao Cho-fai, said, “Lingnan University is pleased by the passage of the Bill which will lay a solid foundation for the further development of the University and enhance our governance system going forward. In the implementation process, we will continue to solicit views from various stakeholders, including staff, students, alumni, and other relevant parties, and we are grateful for their valuable input.”

President of LU, Prof Leonard K Cheng, is pleased that the LegCo passed the Bill. He said, “With the pressing need to strengthen our senior leadership team for the growth of Lingnan University, the Bill will enable the University to appoint up to three Vice-Presidents and build a stronger team to further our academic excellence and enhance our collaborations with local, mainland and international partners.”

He added that LU students are our key stakeholders. To promote the students’ participation in the University affairs, the Bill enables the student representatives elected from undergraduate and postgraduate students to be members of LU’s Council and Court.

The Bill as passed will become effective upon gazettal.
