Subsite Background

KOElderly

KOElderly is a platform to encourage less-engaged elderly in the community to explore their interests and enjoy their retirement life. They aim to enhance elderly access to social media to overcome the digital divide in the inter-generational interactions. In long-term, they hope to extend elderly social engagement and widen their social circle.

The Issue

According to Baptist of Kwan Social Service (2018), more than half of the elderly (59.5%) felt bored, nearly one-third of the elderly (64.6%) thought they were useless, and one-tenth of the elderly might have depression symptoms. One of the factors causing the elderly's depression was social exclusion since they did not participating in any social activities. Besides, Hong Kong also lacks sufficient support for enhancing the practical skills for elderly in using smart devices. Therefore, researchers found that confidence among elderly was decreasing, many of the elderly were unable to use electronic products, leading to loneliness and a lack of self-awareness.

The Solution

Consequently, a group of Lingnan students decide to start an enterprise for the elderly to help them reintegrate into society. KOElderly hopes to nurture elderly KOL by teaching them video-making skills, let them explore different activities and trends through shooting videos. Gain peer recognition by sharing their KOL experience with their friends. Besides, help them to enhance public speaking skills and strengthen their confidence in front of cameras.

Impact

They have already cooperated with local communities, including Caritas Elderly Center- Tin Yuet and The Boys’ and Girls’ Club Association of Hong Kong, KOElderly was invited to provide a KOL service for the elderly in the elderly center to explore the experience as being a KOL.
