Mr Bernard Charnwut Chan and Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung discuss quality education at Lingnan University’s Distinguished Leaders Dialogue

The Distinguished Leaders Dialogue Series — Dialogue on Education was held on 16 January on the University’s campus.  The series, organised by the University, is one of the major events in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of its re-establishment in Hong Kong.

 

Mr Bernard Charnwut Chan, Convenor of the Non-official Members of the Executive Council and Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government were invited as panelists for the dialogue, and Ms Lee Suet-ying, Chairperson of the Hong Kong Association of the Heads of Secondary Schools was the dialogue’s facilitator.  They shared their insights on education-related affairs such as our examination and assessment systems, issues arising from curriculum development and adjustment, ways to boost the resilience of students, career options for young people and other with some 200 attendants including staff and students of Lingnan University, principals, teachers and students of secondary schools, staff members of other tertiary institutions, as well as other members of the education sector and the general public.

 

In his welcoming address, Prof Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University pointed out it was commonly agreed that education is an important social issue with profound impact on Hong Kong’s future development.  “I am delighted that many scholars and education experts joined this event today, and I hope all attendants can exchange and discuss with the speakers actively, and deliberate together on ideas and strategies for the development of education in Hong Kong,” said President Cheng.

 

The next dialogue on financial development will be held on 26 February.  Panelists will include Dr the Honourable Joseph Yam Chi-kwong, Non-official Member of the Executive Council, and Mr Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen, Chairman of the Council of Lingnan University, with President Leonard K Cheng as facilitator.  Focusing on finance-related policies, financial infrastructure, regulatory issues, and the development of new financial products and services, they will discuss how Hong Kong can enhance and strengthen its status as an international finance centre under the context of adjustment of the global economy and advancement of the Chinese economy to the central part of the international economic arena.
